Earth Day
Children are the environmentalists of tomorrow. They play an influential role in family purchasing decisions and in encouraging their parents to recycle. Recognizing this, Berry Plastics works with local elementary schools to provide students with a foundation for understanding conservation.
Since 1991, Berry Plastics has brought a program of environmental education to the students. Beginning in February, our employees visit area schools to speak to third grade students about the importance of recycling to our environment. The presentation demonstrates how to reduce, reuse, and recycle all types of material, specifically, plastic. The students are given an activity/coloring book, developed by Berry employees, that teaches the children more about reducing, reusing, and recycling.
The students are then invited to tour our plant in April in conjunction with Earth Day where the children see the process of turning new and recycled plastic into a usable product. The tour has grown from 1,200 students in 1991 to 2,500 in 2004. At the end of the tour, each student is given a souvenir made from recycled plastic and teachers are given trees to plant at their schools.
It takes many volunteers to run this program. Over 1,200 Berry employees volunteer their time and energy to visit schools and assist with Earth Day tours.
